Los estudiantes comenzaron su mandato al final del Movimiento por los Derechos Civiles, y algunos, como el cineasta y narrador Ben Caldwell, despu\u00e9s de haber regresado de luchar en la Guerra de Vietnam. Llegaron al campus despu\u00e9s del Levantamiento de Watts de 1965 y el tiroteo en una reuni\u00f3n de la Uni\u00f3n de Estudiantes Negros en 1969, que dej\u00f3 muertos a dos estudiantes de UCLA y l\u00edderes de los Panteras Negras. Ante el racismo en el campus, los estudiantes se unieron en un grupo compacto, aprendiendo y colaborando entre s\u00ed.
