Press Play: A look at black films that came out of the 1965 Watts Uprising

The Watts Uprising of 1965 left 34 people dead. Most of the news coverage at the time was by white people who didn’t understand the neighborhood. At the time, a group of UCLA students, dubbed L.A. Rebellion, created a black film movement to tell more nuanced stories about black life. Films from them, and artists who followed in their footsteps, are being shown at the exhibit space Art + Practice in Leimert Park. The exhibition is called Time Is Running Out of Time: Experimental Film and Video from the L.A. Rebellion and Today. It’s on display through September 14.
